Alcorn State has hired Eugenia Fernandez as the program’s new head coach.

The position had been open since May 31st, when previous head coach Josef Rankin was non-renewed in his role. The Lady Braves went through the entirety of the summer and majority of the fall with an interim head coach.

Fernandez previously spent a stint on staff at Florida A&M, most recently as a volunteer assistant coach. She was also an assistant coach on the program’s staff in 2014 and 2015. She was part of the coaching staff that helped guide the Rattlers to back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances in each of those years.

Prior to her college coaching tenures, Fernandez spent more than a decade playing for the Colombian national team. A native of Colombia, Fernandez played for the national program in various tournaments including the Pan Am Games and World Championships over her time in the uniform. She played collegiately at Miami Dade College, earning all-conference honors twice.

At Alcorn, Fernandez takes over a program that finished 17-33 overall last season with a 9-12 showing against SWAC opponents in conference play.
