Michigan head coach Carol Hutchins won her 1,675th career game on Friday afternoon, officially taking sole possession of first place in the NCAA all-time record book.
A 3-0 win over Northern Kentucky on Friday clinched the record for Hutchins, who entered the weekend tied with former Arizona head coach Mike Candrea atop the career wins record.
Now in her 38th season leading the Wolverines’ program, Hutchins graduated from Michigan State in 1979, spent single seasons as an assistant coach at Indiana and head coach at Ferris State in 1981 and ’82 before joining the Michigan program as an assistant coach in 1983. In 1985, she took the helm of the program and the rest, as they say, is history.
Hutchins’ career accolades include 22 Big Ten titles, 18 conference Coach of the Year awards, as well as the 2005 National Championship – the first time a team located east of the Mississippi River had won the Women’s College World Series title.
