Club Profile: Texas Glory 05 Shines at 12U In-State, Looking Now to Make a National Run

The Texas Glory 05 team is competing at several elite national tournaments including PGF 12U Nationals.

As we inch closer to summer, and after having completed a look at the Extra Elite Club 50 14U teams and announcing recently that we’ll feature the 18U age division next, rest assured we’re not going to exclude the 12U and 16U programs!

Today we’ll look closer at one of the top younger age teams that’s making some noise down in the Lone Star State.

Coach Corey Brown

After a convincing 9-2 win in the championship game of the USA Softball Spring Texas Challenge in Houston on Sunday where the Texas Glory 05 team came out on top of the 24-team field, there are few who would dispute that it is one of the top programs in the state (along with, most would say, the Texas Blaze, Diamond Sports Hotshots – Jones and the up-and-coming Texas Dirt Divas).

Coached by Corey Brown, The Glory’s premier 12U team is playing a strong summer schedule where it will have a chance to show off its strong corps of 2023 standouts and a pair of promising 2024’s at top-level events such as Tulsa Elite, Top Gun Invitational, Triple Crown Colorado Sparkler, VTD Junior National Championship and the PGF 12U Nationals.

We caught up with Coach Brown this week to learn more about team’s talent, culture and history—here’s what he had to say…

When and how did the Glory 05 team get its start?
The 05 Texas Glory was formed in 2016 as a second year 10U team. At the time, we only had three players on the squad. The team held a 10U tryout and I must say we were lucky to have a group of young talented players join the team.

Where are you based and where do your athletes come from primarily?
Our team is based in McKinney, Texas and the athletes are from the local Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and Wichita Falls, Texas. We also have three who are from Oklahoma.

What do you hope to accomplish with the team on and off the field?
The goal as always is to develop our players into solid outstanding citizens, top level softball players and provide a path to becoming elite college softball players.

Prior to this week’s Texas Challenge Series title, what have been some of your successes in terms of winning or placing at events?
We took 2nd place at the USA Elite World Fastpitch Championship in Kissimmee, Florida over the summer (2017) and finished 2nd last fall in the Ronald McDonald tourney in Houston.

What is it about the Glory that attracted you and made it the organization you wanted to join?
The reason I joined Texas Glory was because of the reputation the organization has across the country. Kevin Shelton has done a tremendous job building a solid organization that is well-respected by club teams and colleges. The organization puts players first, has a strong focus on development and leadership as well as teaching life lessons.

What’s your background in softball and experience in the Glory program?
I’ve been with the Glory organization for four years now, three as an assistant and one as a head coach. I’ve had a chance to learn from the some of the best coaches in the country and former D1 College players who have come back to help coach within the organization.

Coach Brown talks to his team prior to the game kicking off.

The Texas Glory program isn’t just in Texas any more… how many teams are there and where all can we see the recognizable red, white and blue Glory colors?
There are 70+ overall from various states, including Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Kansas and Tennessee, as well as all over Texas in areas like Central Texas, Corpus Christi, East Texas, Houston, North Texas, San Antonio and El Paso.

What are the factors that you feel will determine if this 05 team is successful or not?
Player development is always the number one goal. The focus should be on academics, understanding the commitment it takes to be successful at this game and becoming familiar with the recruiting process. Time goes by fast, so gaining knowledge about recruiting at young level is important.

What do you think are the strengths of the team?
Our main strengths are pitching and defense. Our pitching staff consistently works on development year around and the defense is very fundamentally sound. Fundamentals are a big part of the practice routines, along with improving game awareness.

If there is one thing you would say that separates you from other club programs, what would it be?
It’s a good question! We are very focused on our approach, which is all about player development—mental, emotional and physical.
