Leading up to the 2023 college softball season, Extra Inning Softball is expanding our college softball coverage and our team of college softball writers.
We are intentionally expanding our coverage of college softball this season, specifically with more consistent and in-depth coverage of Division II and Division III softball as our primary goal. There is some terrific softball played at the D2 and D3 levels and we want to highlight the programs, players, and coaches who have success at those levels, but don’t always get the spotlight opportunities that they earn.
As part of our expanded coverage, we are also expanding in the personnel department. Veteran college coach Sara Pelegreen is joining the Extra Inning Softball staff as a college softball writer, primarily concentrating on Division II and Division III coverage.
“I’m really excited that Sara is joining our college softball team,” said Extra Inning Softball National College Softball Editor Justin McLeod. “I have known Sara for quite a while and she brings great softball knowledge, unique perspectives, and a tremendous work ethic. Having her on our writing team will not only give us the chance to concentrate more coverage on Division II and Division III softball, but it will also make our general college softball coverage even better across the board.”
Pelegreen spent the last three years as an assistant coach at Division I Robert Morris University before departing the Colonials’ coaching staff this summer to spend more time with her family. She was the program’s primary pitching coach during her tenure and guided the staff to significant improvements, including a team ERA nearly three runs lower year-over-year in her first season.
Prior to joining the staff at RMU, Pelegreen spent three years as head coach and five years in total on staff at NCAA Division II Wheeling Jesuit University, a complete tenure that stretched from 2015-19.
An alumnus of West Virginia State, Pelegreen graduated with a degree in communications and journalism and worked in the television news industry immediately after college. While at WVSU, she set the program record for career saves and earned 54 wins in the circle.
“I’m very excited for the opportunity to join the college writing staff with Extra Inning Softball,” Pelegreen said. “After stepping away from college coaching in May, I really wanted to find a way to still be connected to the game at this level. The athletes are amazing, and they put in really hard work. I just want to help bring more to the spotlight.
“I have a huge soft spot for DII and DIII ball since that’s where I started my coaching career, so to elevate the coverage for them is a privilege.”
Pelegreen will contribute to Extra Inning Softball’s preseason coverage of college softball at all levels and will lead our coverage of Division II and Division III softball during the 2023 season. She joins our writing staff effective October 1st.
