On this Easter Day edition, we announce this week’s Extra Inning Softball National High School Player of the Week awards by honoring a catcher in Arizona who has led her team to the top of the state and national rankings and a Virginia pitcher who picked a good week to shine as she’s taking an unofficial visit to the homestate Cavaliers’ campus this weekend.
If you'd like to nominate players for future consideration, email us at email@example.com.
We're looking for top performances in high school play each week that can be on a single game or cumulative week basis.
Extra Inning Softball’s National High School Player of the Week
Macy Simmons (Hamilton, Chandler, Arizona)
Rated as one of the top catchers in the country in her 2019 class and a Top 10 overall prospect, Macy has proven why she’s one of the best on the high school fields too as she’s led Hamilton High to a 20-1 record, a No. 1 ranking in Arizona and No. 2 in the nation according to MaxPreps.
She’s already led the Huskies to two Class 6A state titles with a great chance to make it a threepeat. Last season, the standout catcher batted .419 with eight home runs and earned All-American honors as she called the pitches for her team in every game.
This year, Macy has elevated her game to another level and had a fantastic week at the 21st annual Desert Mountain Tournament as Hamilton went 7-0 and outscored its opponents 81-7 including a 19-0 win over Pinnacle in the title game.
Macy was the star offensively for the Huskies as she hit .625 for the tournament with five home runs and an amazing 22 RBIs in the seven wins including a 4-for-4 performance in the championship contest.
For the season, the future ASU signee has played in all 21 games and is batting .594 (38-for-64) with 10 home runs and 10 doubles for a .632 on-base percentage with 42 RBIs. She’s also had only one strikeout all season in 76 plate appearances.
Defensively, Macy has been on fire as well, not making an error this spring in 132 total chances.
Her great high school season follows a strong fall and winter club campaign with her Firecrackers – Rico team in which she led her squad, one of the best in the country and loaded with talent, in home runs and RBI.
The Arizona junior is a strong bet to repeat as an All-American and is a leading candidate for Gatorade State Player of the Year as well.
Runner-Up National Player of the Week
Madison Inscoe (Nansemond Suffolk Academy, Suffolk, Virginia)
Extra Inning Softball profiled Madison, a 5-foot-8 pitcher/infielder, about two weeks ago as she made the Elite 100 list for the Class of 2022 recruits.
This week, the Virginia athlete showed she can back up the acclaim on the high school fields as well as in club ball where she shines for her Lady Dukes team.
Tuesday night Madison went 4-for-5 with a single, double and two over-the-fence home runs compiling four RBI and scoring four runs. Madison also came into the game and closed it out in the circle to give her team a shutout win.
Thursday night she hit a key triple and ended up scoring a run in a tight 2-0 win. Her hit came off a Virginia recruit—ironic, in that Madison is on the Cavalier campus this week taking an unofficial visit.
She concluded the week with a .625 average and the two home runs and also had a 1.000 fielding average.
