Seattle head coach Geoff Hirai earned his 200th career win on Friday in a 6-4 triumph over UNLV.
As the Redhawks’ skipper celebrates the milestone victory, here are Five Fast Facts about his career.
1. He is in his eighth year as head coach.
Hirai took the helm of the Seattle program ahead of the 2016 campaign; during his tenure, the squad has reached the WAC tournament five times in six full seasons.
2. He led the Redhawks to the NCAA tournament twice.
In 2019, Hirai led the Redhawks to the NCAA tournament for the first time under his leadership. The program returned to the postseason in 2021, technically making back-to-back appearances after the cancellation of the 2020 postseason.
3. He has posted a winning record four times.
In six full seasons as head coach, excluding the shortened 2020 campaign, Hirai has guided the Redhawks to a winning record four times. The Redhawks have been on an upward trajectory in the latter portion of Hirai’s tenure, including reaching the 40-win plateau in 2019.
4. He spent several years coaching in the Power 5.
Hirai’s coaching resume includes four years on staff at Oregon State, as well as stints on staff at Virginia and Washington. He was part of the staff that helped guide Washington to the 2007 Women’s College World Series and held the title of Associate Head Coach during the latter portion of his tenure at Oregon State.
5. He previously served as a professional baseball scout.
From 2001-03, Hirai worked as a scout for the Cincinnati Reds, evaluating players in advance of the Major League Baseball draft. A former college baseball player, he also coached at the travel and college baseball levels.
