If you know your club softball in Texas, you’re no doubt familiar with the success of John Carpenter.
In July, after years of coaching within the Texas Blaze organization, he joined Scott Smith’s Texas Bomber program in the role of Associate Head Coach with the 18U Gold team.
Carpenter has been a coach and mentor to student-athletes for 29 years and in 2016 led his Blaze 18U Gold team to a TC/USA National Championship. He has worked with athletes at all levels and in all sports, with former players who’ve gone on to compete in the NCAA and NFP, but also in the NFL and in Major League Baseball.
With decades of experience with athletes not just between the lines, but also off the field and in the classroom, long-time coach and teacher has built a series of clinics under the banner of ““Win The Moment,” which the coach says is “about equipping student-athletes and coaches with the tools to excel in the mental game while growing their leadership skills.”
Carpenter, known by many as simply “Carp,” has designed the Win The Moment clinic as a “three hour classroom-style course focusing on topics such as surrounding yourself with the right people, excelling in the mental game and winning as a leader along with other areas such as academics, social life and athletics.”
Here’s a clip from one presentation two weeks ago where the coach touched on the ability of an individual to greatly impact a situation by his or her actions:
You have the power to impact your team, your school, your family, your community just by your actions! You are a powerful change agent! Embrace this truth for good and you will be a great teammate and member of society! @WinTheMoment1 #Leadership #power #bethepositivechange pic.twitter.com/jBvhaDuH6m

A major component of the clinic presentations is the emphasis on the mental approach. Carpenter, who likes to use quote from famous athletes to illustrate his points, refers to soccer great Mia Hamm when he says, “The most important attribute a player must have is mental toughness.”
He stresses the “7 C’s of Mentally Tough Athletes” as he goes over this list in his clinics:
Seven Key Traits of Mentally Tough Athletes:
- Competitiveness: competitors use failure to drive them; quitters use failure as a reason to give up.
- Confidence: walk through life believing you are the best… the best athlete, best student, best person; arrogance, however, is the enemy of confidence.
- Control: success in the mental game has everything to do with controlling your emotions in the moment.
- Commitment: to be mentally tough you have to keep your goals and dreams at the forefront of your mind.
- Composure: you must learn to be composed, especially when things don’t go your way.
- Courage: it takes courage to grow up and achieve your full potential.
- Consistency: be great! repeat often!
Though the Win The Moment clinic is geared typically toward the student-athlete, it has received rave reviews from coaches, parents and educational leaders as well.
One such review, posted on the Win the Moment Facebook page, said:
“What an incredible resource for coaches and athletes. Growing up playing the game of baseball I was always told the importance of the “Mental part of Game” but was never given the tools or resources to put into practice. Now as a coach it is invaluable to have a resource like Win the Moment to invest back into my kids lives growing them well beyond the game. Carp is the real deal. As one of my mentors his fingerprints are all over the success I had as player and now as coach.”
Hoping to take the clinics nationwide to teams, organizations, schools and even businesses, Carpenter states that his end goal is to help anyone looking to improve their lives and better those around them.
“If you want to be a successful leader,” he says, “you have to grow yourself, teach others, encourage them and leave a legacy.”
