Queens interim head coach Kella Goins has been promoted to the full-time position, the school announced earlier this week.
Goins had taken the program’s reins on an interim basis in mid-March and led the Royals to a 10-13 record and an 8-10 showing in ASun conference play since that time.
“Since asking Kella to lead our program I have watched and supported knowing that we have the right person at the right time,” Queens athletic director Cherie Swarthout said in a statement. “She has been purposeful in her leadership, nurturing in her care of our student-athletes, and committed to delivering a Queens experience.”
In her second season as an assistant coach prior to taking on the interim head coaching role, Goins graduated from Lincoln Memorial in 2021 and spent a fall semester as a graduate assistant at her alma mater before joining the Queens staff.
As a senior at LMU in 2021, Goins was named the South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year.
With the appointment, Goins is now the youngest head coach in Division 1 softball. She is the first 2021 graduate to be named a D1 head coach, and she is the 18th Black female to currently serve as head coach of a D1 softball program.
