An excellent infielder who, last year at PGF Nationals didn’t make an error in six games (38 innings), she is a .400-plus hitter with power and at the So Cal A’s Invitational hit a two-run blast that gave Explosion a 2-1 win in the opening round of single-elimination play. Coaches talk about her work ethic and maturity as two intangibles that have helped her excel individually and lead her teams to multiple championships.

Brittany says the key to her success is getting a lot of reps.

What’s your approach to hitting that you believe has made you successful? I think that the main thing that makes me a successful hitter is that I hit a lot! My parents built a batting cage in our backyard when I was 10 years old. My dad put our pitching machine on a wagon so that I could pull it out of our shed, and attached an automatic feeder with a remote control. It gave me the ability to hit every day when I was young. Even now, I hit 4 to 5 days per week, every week. As I have gotten older, I go to the field more often in order to see the ride of the ball, and also as a gauge for power.

What did you know about the Louisville Slugger Hit Club before being invited?
I have followed the Hit Club since it began in 2015. At that time, I had already committed to the University of Florida and I knew that my future teammate, Amanda Lorenz, was going to be a part of the first group. Since then, I have followed the Hit Club updates online, as well as the careers of those who have attended.

What’s been the #1 thing in your mind that’s helped you develop as a good hitter?
Don’t get cheated! I’d rather strike out with a good, hard swing than hit a weak ground ball just to make contact.

What goes through your mind as you step into the batter’s box?
Win. I want to win the at bat and put my team in a position to win the game.

Other than the obvious, getting on base, what would you qualify as a successful at-bat?
To me, a successful at-bat is when I’ve picked a good pitch and locked up to the ball. I’ve always been told that a great hitter is one that hits for a high average and has the ability to hit it out. That is what I strive to do every at bat.

The California hitter says committing–and ultimately signing with–the Florida Gator program has been the highlight of her softball career.

What’s been your highlight of your career and why?
Committing to the University of Florida! Being a Gator had been my dream since I started playing competitive softball, so when Coach Walton asked me if I wanted to be a Gator, I was truly speechless. It was literally a dream come true! I’ve also played on a number of Championship Teams, and those are always special memories.

Where will you be playing this summer?
This summer, we’ve played in the So Cal A’s Invitational and will be at the Boulder IDT, the Surf City Summer Showcase and PGF Nationals.

When did you first realize you had the ability to play at the next level?
I really felt like I could play at the next level when I moved to travel ball in 10U. Playing in Southern California, we were able to face some of the best players. It’s amazing to look back at the talent on that 10U team, and how many of us are getting ready to play in college!

What is it you love about softball if you were explaining your passion for the sport to someone not familiar with it?
I love the fact that softball is both an individual and a team sport. When I’m up to bat, what matters most is the time that I have put into my swing. But, when I’m on defense, my teammates and I have to rely on one another in order to be successful. I think that everyone that knows me or sees me play can tell that I love to play softball!
