Maryland head coach Mark Montgomery recorded his 600th career win on Sunday.

The Terrapins’ skipper earned the milestone victory in a 5-3 win over North Dakota State to close Maryland’s home tournament on Sunday.

As the veteran coach celebrates his milestone win, here are Five Fast Facts about him and his career.

1. He is in his third season at Maryland.

After a successful tenure at Louisiana Tech, Montgomery took over the Maryland program late in the summer of 2019. His first two seasons at the program’s helm included the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign and the conference-only 2021 season.

2. He is in his 22nd year as a college head coach.

Prior to Maryland, Montgomery spent seven years at LA Tech and also previously coached at Centenary, Northern Colorado, and NAAI Georgetown College in Kentucky. He has spent 22 years as a college softball head coach and is at his fifth school during that time period.

3. He has led three different programs to the postseason.

While at Georgetown College, Montgomery led that program to back-to-back NAIA postseason berths in 2001 and ’02. At Centenary, when the school competed at Division I, Montgomery took the program to the NCAA regional round in both 2004 and 2005. At Louisiana Tech, the Lady Techsters won the CUSA tournament and reached the NCAA regional round in both 2017 and 2019.

4. He is a veteran of program rebuilds.

Before Montgomery arrived at Louisiana Tech, the program had won 30 or more games just once in more than two decades. During his tenure, Montgomery crossed that plateau five times, including recording the program’s first 45-win season in 2019.

5. He has a coaching tree with several branches on it.

Montgomery’s current assistant coach at Maryland, Emerald Doria, both played for and previously coached with Montgomery, at Centenary and Louisiana Tech, respectively. Montgomery’s coaching tree at the collegiate level also includes current head coaches Bianca Duran (D2 CSU-Pueblo) and Kailey Anderson (D3 Howard Payne).
