In the past several weeks, we’ve published some look-backs at various years in the coaching carousel cycle. Starting with early last decade, we’ve looked at the Whos, Whens, and even some Whys of various moves and carousel cycles.
As we reach the 2014 Carousel in our look-back, we’re going to do something a little different. We’re grading each and every head coaching move from this specific Carousel cycle; some were successful, some less so. Some were headline-makers and some needed to be buried on page 57.
To reach these grades, we examined various criteria. Success in the position was the top determiner, though longevity om the role also was among the criteria. Coaches who had success in short order before moving up the coaching ladder weren’t penalized for quick tenures, but we created a grade specifically for those coaches who are best described as “What could have been”.
We looked at both on-field and off-field considerations in assigning these grades; the latter factor is noted in places where it came into play on the grading scale. You’ll also notice that each grading level is assigned both a letter grade and a superlative title. That was the fairest way to judge.
There were 35 total head coaching moves in 2014. Eight years later, here’s how that edition of the Coaching Carousel grades out.
