Stephen F. Austin head coach Richie Bruister has resigned from his position, the school announced on Friday.
In his first and only season as the Ladyjacks’ head coach, Bruister guided the program to a 30-24 overall record and a 3rd-place finish in the WAC standings. SFA knocked out top-seeded Utah Tech en route to finish their season in the conference tournament semifinals.
“I want to thank Richie for his time this year at SFA and I wish him well in his new venture. I know that he will continue to be successful,” SFA athletic director Ryan Ivey said in a statement. “As we move forward with a coaching search, stability is critical at this point in time. Our softball program has been consistently successful recently which has culminated in winning 30+ games each season since 2018. Couple that success with our location, great campus, and recent affiliation with the University of Texas System, I am confident that we will have the ability to attract a high caliber coach to not only continue, but elevate our program. The future continues to be bright for SFA, our athletics department and softball program.”
Prior to his tenure at SFA, Bruister spent seven seasons as the head coach at Texas A&M-Commerce, a tenure that ended following the 2021 season. During his time as the Lions’ head coach, Bruister collected a 231-116 overall record. He also served as head coach at Texas Woman’s and Henderson State.
