This was my maiden voyage to Boca Raton, the first trip to south Florida in a dozen years of writing about college softball.
It may come as quite a shock, but the beach town was bright, sunny, and warm. Crazy thoughts, all; I know.
A 5-team tournament drew me to Boca. In addition to the hosting FAU Owls, North Carolina; Boston College; Villanova; and Wisconsin were in attendance. It was a solid group of teams, a round-robin tournament, and three days full of games. What’s not to love?
Wisconsin won the weekend with a 4-0 showing. The Badgers arrived late to Boca, with their flight delayed thanks to a winter storm in Madison. Another crazy thought!
Outside of the weekend-undefeated Badgers, the team that impressed me the most was also the team that I entered the weekend most eager to see: those same FAU Owls.
