BREAKING: Texas Tech Parts Ways with Sami Ward as Head Coach

Sami Ward is out as the head coach at Texas Tech, sources confirmed to Extra Inning Softball on Sunday.

Hired in October 2020, Ward finished her second season as the Red Raiders’ head coach on Saturday against Texas; the Red Raiders currently sit 5th overall in the Big 12 standings and completed their Big 12 season with a 5-13 record against conference opponents. The program finished the regular season 22-26 overall.

The Red Raiders have the final week of the regular season off by virtue of a bye week in conference play. The Big 12 tournament expanded this year to include all seven softball teams in the league.

In her first year at the program’s helm in 2021, Ward led the Red Raiders to a 21-26 overall record, including a 3rd-place finish at the Big 12 tournament.

Prior to taking the helm in Lubbock, Ward spent five years as the head coach at Loyola Marymount, her alma mater. She won 138 games during her tenure leading the Lions, won the National Invitational Softball Championship postseason tournament title in 2018, and was a three-time West Coast Conference Coach of the Year.

Her resume also includes stints as head coach at North Dakota, Academy of Art, and Dakota Wesleyan.
