There’s nothing quite like a college athlete earning a scholarship, but those moments are even better when the reward comes as a surprise to that same athlete – and when her team celebrates with her after she finds out.
That’s exactly what happened to Southeastern Louisiana freshman outfielder Jillian Gutierrez this week. During a practice in Hammond, Gutierrez was taking ground balls with her teammates when writing on one of the softballs caught her attention as she went to throw it in.
“”You have earned a SLU softball scholarship!” the ball said “Lion up!”
Gutierrez’s teammates gave their newly-rewarded teammate a moment to comprehend exactly what the message meant before mobbing her in celebration.
