National Club Team of the Week:
Tampa Mustangs 14U – Seymour
After a third-place finish in the 14U division at the Scenic City Showcase two hours north in Chattanooga, Tampa Mustangs – Seymour would put together an even more impressive run to a 14U championship in the invitational – and higher – division at Atlanta Legacy.
The hot bats of the Mustangs that would earn them an 11-2 win over Virginia Unity and win them the Atlanta Legacy Showcase 14U Invitational Division Championship.
Ava Blakely, Ruggiero, Shaw and Thomas all went yard in the championship game on the turf field at Burnt Hickory to pace the offense as Jon Pierce’s squad posted yet another fantastic placement at a major tournament this summer.
Catcher Hailey Vassalotti led the way offensively with a .619 average in 21 at-bats with four doubles, five driven in and nine runs scored, while the big bats of Karhys Pierce and Ruggiero drove in a combined 23 runs for the Mustangs in eight games.
Thomas joined Pierce at the top of the Mustangs leaderboards with three home runs each, and Shaw posted weekend with a .500 average, seven driven in and fantastic defensive play in right field.
And while the Mustangs’ bats had quite the weekend, the two-headed monster of Lexi King and Presley Harrison did work in the circle. King had a 1.40 ERA in 15 innings of work, allowing just three earned runs, striking out seven. Harrison, on the other hand, went 19 innings and struck out 24, allowing opponents to just a .191 BAA on the weekend.
