Los Alamitos High, CA, rolled into Pacifica High, CA, as the top-ranked team in the nation, but the Mariners had other ideas.
#40 Pacifica rallied from a 2-0 deficit to upset the Griffins, 3-2, in a non-league game on Wednesday at Pacifica High in Garden Grove, California.
Sophomore Kiana Bell led off the bottom of the seventh with a double. Chloe Perreira pinch ran for her. Brynne Nally bunted Perreira to third and freshman Annika Sogsti singled up the middle to drive in the walk-off victory for the Mariners.
“I’m just happy for our girls,” Pacifica coach Tony Arduino said. “They’ve had such a rough year with COVID and not sure if we were even gonna have a season. They’ve stayed focused the entire time. They have really started to come together the last month. It’s been fun to watch and be a part of.”

Los Alamitos coach Rob Weil was making a return to his old stomping grounds where he led the Mariners to five CIF-Southern Section titles and a national championship. Arduino and Weil had worked together to honor the star players from Pacifica in the past during the offseason.
“Him and I actually went through all the names we have displayed on our outfield fence before the game,” Arduino said. “He coached most of them. He’s a legend and I’m just glad we competed and found a way to win. I appreciated how gracious Rob was after the game. Congratulated our team, class act!”
