SoCal Breakers 14U-Brunetti P/IF Caylene Nguyen is a multi-talented, multi-skilled 2024 prospect on the softball field who also plays multiple sports and multiple musical instruments.
Nguyen also excels in volleyball, basketball and soccer, she plays the piano and clarinet and she can recite all the U.S. Presidents forwards and backwards.
“Caylene is a great asset to our team,” 2024 C/2B Taylor Treadwell said. “I have been catching her since I was 10 (years old) and she has a lot of velocity and accuracy. She also has a nasty change-up as well as good spin. When not pitching, you can find her all over the infield making plays with her solid glove work and strong arm. She hits 3 in the lineup and is a power hitter. She has great bat speed and can drive the ball all around the field.
“To our team, she is one of our most fierce and competitive players and tends to thrive in high-pressure situations whether on the mound or up to bat. She is unique because she’s kind and respectful to others. She has many other talents including playing multiple instruments and sports like soccer and basketball. Overall, Caylene is a very talented and gifted player.”
Like many top Southern California players, Nguyen had very few opportunities to showcase her skills this summer. But last fall she batted .465 and led the Breakers in all major offensive categories, including doubles, home runs, RBIs, SLG and OPS while batting in the 3-hole.
In the circle, Nguyen can be dominating with velocity in the 60-62 mph range. She has six pitches she can throw at any time in the count with a fastball, curve, drop, screw and a brutal change-up.
“She is a gifted softball player with a powerful, athletic frame as well as lightning quick hands,” Breakers coach Curt Brunetti said.
And she has a ferocious competitive streak.
“Caylene is a fierce competitor beyond anything else,” 2024 OF/C Alexa Brunetti said. “She is crazy talented and most of all humble beyond belief. #87 is the heart of our team. I catch her and when she is in the circle I know we will come out on top. She is irreplaceable. Love that girl.”
