The So Cal A’s Invitational kicked off Friday in Irvine, California with 17 of the top 18U club teams in the nation and the talent didn’t disappoint.
Spread out over three fields at Harvard Park, there were two games for each team and the field featured seven of the Top 10 players in the Extra Inning Softball Elite 100 for the 2018 class.
College coaches were on hand including Oregon Head Coach Mike White, who got to see four of his Oregon players on one team as the California Cruisers are Duck heavy led by one of those Top 10 players in Rachel Cid, who made several outstanding defensive players on the opening day of the tournament which concludes Sunday afternoon.
On the offensive side, several well-known players showed they had pop in the bat led by the unofficial MVP of the day, Joley Mitchell, a 2019 infielder committed to Missouri, who had two home run blasts and a single in one game. When she wasn’t crushing the ball, Mitchell was drawing walks from respectful pitchers.
Others who went yard on Friday included Jazmine Hill (2019, Arizona State), Karley Heath (2018, South Carolina) of Georgia Impact, Hayden Brown (2020, LSU) and a pair of Beverly Bandits—Gabby O’Riley (2018, DePaul) and SS/OF Rylee Platusic (2018, Purdue) among others.
And there were strong pitching performances including shutouts by Susannah Anderson (2018, Boston College) of Jersey Intensity and the tag-team duo of Kelly Lynch (2019, Auburn) and Vanessa Oatley (2019, Penn State).
