Book Preview: “Sydney Plays Softball” Published By Softball Dad Steve Brown to “Inspire More Young Girls to Play the Sport”

The softball-oriented book “Sydney Plays Softball” is set to be released this spring.

The plot is one that lovers of softball will appreciate:

While watching a baseball game with her dad, Sydney, an 8-year-old energetic girl, wonders why she only ever sees boys playing.  The answer inspires her discovery of softball and how important it is to catch, throw, and hit the big yellow ball.  With a lot of hard work, a great coach, and some silly teammates, Sydney may be able to help the Magical Unicorns win their first game.  Will she strike out or hit a home run?

That’s the softball-centric storyline of the upcoming book titled “Sydney Plays Softball” that author Steve Brown is publishing with the help of a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter that began on January 25, 2022 and will run until February 24, 2022. The release date for the book is set for this spring.

Author Steve Brown and his daughter Sydney.

Brown is the father of two daughters, now 20 and 17, who played sports throughout their youth, one in soccer and one in softball. Their athletic endeavors helped inspire the soon-to-be-published book, which he hopes will, in turn, inspire thousands of young girls around the world to learn more about softball.

Not coincidentally, the daughter that he watched play softball over the last decade is named Sydney!

“I wrote the book because I didn’t see any other children’s book on the market that served to inspire young girls to play,” Brown explains.

“We see baseball everywhere, and although some girls also play, for the most part they are left to wonder what their options are.  We know how wonderful softball is, from an athletic and social perspective, and I wanted to expose more girls to all its benefits.”

The California resident says he grew to love the game as he watched Sydney play through her teenage years in rec and travel ball and, using his background in sales and marketing along with an MBA from Pepperdine University, he saw an opportunity to combine his love of the sport with a chance to market it to potential young players and their parents.

“Our family and so many others have found so much joy in the opening days, out of town tournaments, cheers, and comradery, that I want to get as many involved as possible,” Brown continues.

“As a businessperson, I also saw an opening to provide something no one else has.”

The front cover of the book.

Sydney Plays Softball is a book about a young girl who wonders why so many boys play baseball. Her father explains it’s because girls play a much harder sport called softball,” says the author.

By introducing the children’s book to the Kickstarter community, the hope is that it will educate and inspire young women to pick up a glove and ball, even try out for a local softball team. Brown is offering various reward packages, from e-books, to signed copies as well as equipment and private lessons.

Backers from around the world can become a part of this project by making pledges and donations with the goal of the Kickstarter campaign to help cover the costs of illustration, design, editing, and printing.

The Kickstarter Campaign will run until February 24, and can be found by clicking HERE.

While watching his daughter play softball has given Brown a greater appreciation of the sport, he admits he’s far from being an expert when it comes to running a team.

“I have learned to become the father that cheers and leaves the coaching to the coaches,” the author laughs.

“It’s made the experience much better overall.  But I have been there every step of the way and seen how Sydney’s face lights up around her teammates and how amazingly competitive and focused she is once she’s on the field.”

“She has the same excitement as a high school senior as she did that day I brought home her first glove and ball.  As a parent, all I can ask for is that my kids are happy, and softball has provided endless amounts of happiness to my family.”
