USA Softball President John Gouveia announced this week in a video posted on the USA Softball Facebook page a change in the USA Softball code which allows for local associations to determine how berths are awarded for USA Softball Championship Play for the Girls’ Class A (10U, 12U, 14U, 16U, 18U) National Championships.

One main reason: planning schedules much further in advance.
“The teams, the parents, everyone, they want to know now where they’re playing next year,” Gouveia said, “including national championships, and one of our drawbacks has been that they may not know that they qualified for our championships until a month or sometimes less prior to the event.”
The USA Softball President says that in 2019 there won’t be national qualifying berths, but instead the decisions on who plays in the nationals will be decided based on a proposal that Gouveia himself submitted.
“So what my legislation does is allow the local associations to set their own rules and say, ‘OK, if you do X, Y and Z you get to play in the Nationals ‘”
Another key change is that by playing in a local association-produced event, it will allow teams to follow the stipulations set forth by their association to qualify for the nationals in their age division.
“So once that schedule is out, once the local association produces that, our teams, our members will know is that all they have to do is play in that event–or events, whatever the local association decides–and they qualify for the national championship finals.”
