In 2007, I became a single parent of four children, the youngest just four months old. We faced financial hardship, emotional upheaval, and nonstop schedules. But I made a decision early on: my children wouldn’t miss out on sports because of our circumstances.
The cost of keeping kids on the field continues to climb. A 2024 Wealth Watch survey by New York Life found that parents now spend an average of $3,000 per year on their children’s sports, with 64% reporting increased expenses in recent years (Business Wire, April 22, 2024). Many families are making financial sacrifices to keep athletic dreams alive—especially single parents.
