James Landreneau wasn’t messing around last season. The McNeese head coach had worked hard to promote his program to the Lake Charles community and he knew that the bevy of season ticket holders deserved to see some top teams at Cowgirl Diamond. Landreneau also knew what a battle his team would encounter in the Southland conference race and that they needed to be as prepared as possible.
The result was matchups against nearly a dozen teams from the Power 5 and the American conference, including multi-game sets against Kansas, Arkansas, and UCF and home games against Oklahoma State, Texas, and Texas A&M, among others.
The gamble paid off. With an 18-9 record during regular-season conference play, the Cowgirls finished third in the Southland but never lost in the conference tournament, riding a 3-0 record to a championship and an NCAA tournanment berth.
