As part of our in-depth preseason college softball coverage, today we dive into the Northeast Conference – the NEC – and forecast what could be in store for the league during the 2023 season.
1. Conference Breakdown
Saint Francis continued their years-long run atop the NEC in 2022, winning the conference’s regular-season and tournament titles. The Red Flash were also their only conference team to cross the 30-win plateau.
The NEC got hit with some conference alignment issues, losing two teams and adding one. Bryant and Mount St. Mary’s departed, to join the America East and MAAC, respectively. Stonehill College, one of five teams moving up from Division 2, joined the league.
A total of eight softball programs currently compete in the NEC; those programs include Central Connecticut State, Fairleigh Dickinson, Long Island, Merrimack, Sacred Heart, Saint Francis, Stonehill, and Wagner.
