How A Redshirt Year Reshaped Gabby Bonilla
The transfer portal is one of the hottest topics in college softball. It’s reshaping rosters, sparking debate, and becoming a pivotal part of an athlete’s story. For some, it’s a second chance. For others, it’s a necessary shift. For Gabby Bonilla, it’s a defining chapter that speaks to resilience, growth, and untapped potential.
A 2024 graduate of The Harvey School (NY), Bonilla entered her freshman year of college softball with high expectations. A decorated travel and high school player, her transition to the next level came with new challenges—namely, adjusting to life on the sidelines during a redshirt season. While some might let that quiet their confidence, Bonilla saw it as an opportunity to grow sharper, stronger, and more focused.
Patience and Purpose in a Redshirt Year
Bonilla’s first year didn’t include game-day stats. But it did include discipline, introspection, and work ethic most fans never see. Bonilla received the Highest GPA award for Business Economics students and was on the President’s list for the Fall Semester.
“It isn’t always easy mentally, especially being new to college athletics and competing against girls who have already played at this level,” she said. “What’s kept me going is my time alone on the field, in the batting cages, and going out for runs. Those moments remind me that I’m here for a reason.”
She leaned on old film to rediscover belief in herself—watching highlight reels not for validation, but to remember her why. This mental strength has been the foundation of her redshirt year and the fuel behind her next step.

A Resume That Deserves a Second Look
While her college stat line may be empty, her pre-college achievements are anything but. Bonilla’s background is lined with high-level experience and accolades that speak to her versatility and ceiling.
She’s played for elite clubs like the New Jersey Batbusters, New Jersey Intensity, Team Long Island, and Empire State Huskies—earning spots in top events such as:
• 2023 USA Softball High Performance Program National Selection Event (17/18U)
• 2023 Alliance Fastpitch Stars of Tomorrow Games (Team DeMarini/Osterman)
• 2021 USSSA All-American Team – Team Northeast
• 2019 Softball Youth All-American Games – Team Liberty
• Featured in The Best in USSSA Baseball and Fastpitch Softball (2017 Edition)
In high school, she earned 2024 All-NEPSAC, All-HVAL, MVP honors, and the Silver Slugger Award at Harvey. Before transferring, she was a multi-year All-Section player at Dobbs Ferry High School.
But Bonilla’s impact wasn’t just athletic. A varsity player in volleyball and indoor track, she also took leadership roles—coaching and managing varsity baseball while practicing with the team.

What She’s Looking for in a Program
Entering the portal, Bonilla isn’t just looking for a team—she’s looking for a second family.
“In my next program, I’m looking for somewhere I can play a lot of games, have a team that feels like a second family, and showcase my versatility with my bat, glove, and on the mound.”
That mindset reflects not only her flexibility across positions, but also her maturity in understanding what success looks like at the next level—opportunity, chemistry, and trust.

Message to Fellow Portal Athletes
With so many players navigating similar situations, Bonilla’s journey offers wisdom for others who feel overlooked without in-game college stats.
“The best advice I have for other athletes in the portal is to know what you bring to the table and understand your strengths,” she said. “Trust in your work and the accomplishments that got you to the collegiate level—there truly is a home for everyone.”
Her words cut through the noise of rankings and playing time, offering encouragement that is both grounded and empowering.

What Coaches Should Know
For programs seeking depth, leadership, and adaptability, Bonilla checks every box.
“A future coaching staff can expect a high-energy, team-first competitor who’s always looking to learn,” she explained. “I bring positivity to every practice, I’m kind to my teammates, and I’m very coachable. I love the game, study it constantly, and do whatever it takes to help the team win.”
Those qualities often carry more weight than stat sheets—and coaches looking beyond the box score will find a player eager to prove she belongs.

What This Journey Has Taught Her
From youth tournaments to elite showcases, Bonilla has always been in motion. But the last year has taught her how to pause, reflect, and push forward even without a scoreboard.
“This journey has taught me that patience and perseverance are everything,” she said. “A lot of people think once you commit or make it to the next level, the hard part is over—but the truth is, that’s when the real work begins.”
That lesson now powers her vision for the future.
“In my next chapter, I want to reach my full potential—hit milestones I once thought were out of reach and keep growing stronger on and off the field.”

More Than Just a Portal Entry
Gabby Bonilla isn’t just a name in the portal—she’s an athlete with purpose, a teammate with impact, and a competitor with something to prove. Her story is a reminder that the transfer portal isn’t a reset—it’s a reroute.
And for the right program, she’s more than ready to make an immediate difference.
