One of the top players we saw all summer was Madi Frey, the talented 2022 C/IF for the Birmingham Thunderbolts 16U team coached by Jay Roberson.
She was a key contributor on the team and a major reason we had the Bolts ranked #2 pre-summer at the age division saying of the junior, she’s “a great power hitter with a huge arm.”
Madi also made our 2022 Extra Elite 100 at #55 when the rankings came out in April, 2020, but she will definitely move much higher when the next update for the class is published.
Here’s part of what was written prior to her big summer campaign:
Madison is one of the top power hitting-catchers in the class, but she’s not an all-or-nothing power hitter. When she isn’t dropping bombs, she’s cranking out doubles in the gap. Madi can also play third base at a high level and hit .461 with eight home runs for Jay Roberson’s team last fall (2019). For Steinbrenner (Lutz, Florida) High last year she hit .500 (35-for-70) and only made one error in 23 games. This spring she was batting .489 (22-for-45) with three home runs and 18 RBIs in 13 games before playing was stopped. Madison is getting attention from nearly every SEC and ACC school including instate programs like Florida State and Florida as well as others in the South such as Tennessee and Georgia.
In a video we did at the Top Club National in July (see below), we interviewed Madi and knew then that the Seminoles were very high on her list.
Congratulations to Madi as well as Coach Lonni Alameda and staff for getting a transformative player who can take over a game with her bat and her arm!

Video Interview: 2022 Extra Elite 100 C/IF Madi Frey… Uncommitted, but Not Unnoticed!
Originally published July 6, 2020 on Extra Inning Softball
A player having a great summer is 2022 Extra Elite 100 catcher/infielder Madison “Madi” Frey who plays for the talented Birmingham Thunderbolts – Roberson 16U team.
Though uncommitted, she is one of the best power-hitters in the country and can hit for a high average while stroking doubles in the gap or driving the ball over the fence. As Coach Jay Roberson says, “She’s not an all-or-nothing power hitter, she’s also a big-time catcher and corner infielder.”
Madi is getting attention from nearly every ACC and SEC school and talks about her recruiting outlook in this interview I did with her during play at the Top Club National tournament…
