Obituary: Former Brown Softballer Amanda Asay Passes Away After Skiing Accident

Former Brown softball player Amanda Asay passed away on January 7th following injuries suffered during a skiing accident. She was 33 years old.

Asay graduated from the Brown program following the 2010 season, and spent several years prior to and since then as part of the Canadian Women’s Baseball national program.

The longest-serving member of Canada’s Women’s National Team program, Asay joined the squad in 2005. She was part of the national teams that won five WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup medals, including silver medals at the event in 2008 and ’16. She was part of the Canadian squad that won a silver medal at the Pan Am Games in 2015, the first-ever time that women’s baseball was included as a Pan Am discipline.

“This is really difficult news for our Women’s National Team program,” Baseball Canada’s André Lachance said in a statement. Lachance managed Asay on various national teams from 2005-2018. “Amanda was an amazing person who meant a great deal to our program. She was a competitor who possessed all of the characteristics that you look for in a baseball player. She was versatile, intelligent and competitive who rose to the challenge on many occasions. Above all, she was a terrific person who will leave a lasting impact on many people, not only with the Women’s National Team program but all of those who were lucky enough to meet her.”

During her career at the Ivy League program, Asay played both softball and hockey for Brown. She later went on to earn both a Master’s degree and PhD at the University of British Columbia.
