Breaking News
The softball world is reeling after the Israel U-18 National Team was denied the opportunity to compete on the same fields as every other participating nation during the recent WBSC European Championship in Spain. What should have been a celebration of international sport and youth competition turned into a glaring example of exclusion, discrimination, and injustice.
According to multiple sources close to the event, city officials in Pamplona, Spain, where the championship was originally scheduled to take place, refused to allow Israel to play on any of the three designated tournament fields. The reason? Fears that the team’s presence might “offend” certain groups or provoke political backlash.
Despite being confirmed to participate for over a year, Israel’s team was abruptly displaced just weeks before the tournament began. As a result, the entire delegation was moved to Zaragoza, a city located nearly two hours away from the championship hub. All of Israel’s games — as well as those of the teams scheduled to compete against them — were relocated to the alternate site.
While the tournament proceeded for every other country as planned, Israel was isolated, unable to take part in the opening ceremonies or enjoy the same exposure and experience as their peers. Reports also confirm that tournament organizers removed all national flags from the venue rather than risk excluding Israel’s.

For the players — many of whom are just 14 to 17 years old — the experience was not only unfair but emotionally traumatic. Throughout the tournament, they were met by angry protests, with demonstrators appearing at nearly every game. Protesters shouted slurs and anti-Israel rhetoric over bullhorns, including hate-filled chants in both Spanish and English. In one instance, protesters reportedly tried to climb over the outfield fence during a game while fireworks were set off nearby — creating an atmosphere of fear and instability.
Despite the chaos, Israel’s players demonstrated tremendous strength and resilience. They competed in every scheduled game, knowing full well the environment around them was hostile and unjust. Though the team did not record a win, going 0–7 in the standings, they won the respect and admiration of many across the softball world.

Why This Matters
These young women are not politicians. They are not decision-makers in global affairs. They are student-athletes, ambassadors of the game, and carriers of hope for the next generation.
And they were wronged — not just as players, but as people.
This is not simply about a change in venue. It is about denying a team the right to stand on equal ground, both literally and symbolically. By isolating one team due to political fear, organizers undermined the core values of sport: inclusion, unity, and competition without borders.
This experience sends the wrong message to the next generation — that who you are or where you’re from can determine whether you’re welcome. That fear can outweigh fairness. That hate can overrule opportunity.
At Extra Inning Softball, we believe this issue goes far beyond one country or one tournament. It speaks to the heart of what our sport stands for. Softball should be a sanctuary, a level playing field where young athletes are allowed to chase dreams, build friendships, and grow in courage — regardless of the flag on their uniform.
The Global Softball Community Must Speak Out
In moments like this, silence is complicity. We must do more than shake our heads or scroll past headlines. The global softball community — from federations and coaches to fans and athletes — must take a clear and united stand against discrimination in all forms.
Exclusion has no place in softball. Discrimination has no place in international competition. And silence is not an option.
We stand with Israel Softball — and with every athlete who shows up ready to compete with heart, pride, and respect for the game.
This story matters. And we will continue to share it until those in power hear it loud and clear.
Up Next
The Israel U-18 Softball Team will proudly compete in the JCC Maccabi Games in Pittsburgh, August 3–8. This global event celebrates Jewish pride, unity, and athletic excellence. After facing adversity abroad, these athletes return to the field with passion and purpose. Extra Inning Softball will share the results here.
