Catcher Dejah Mulipola was crowned as the champion of Athletes Unlimited’s Season 3 on Sunday night.
Mulipola stood atop the AU leaderboard for most of the 5-week season, including the last three weeks as the captain of the Gold team. Her squad’s victory on Sunday evening included her making up a near-200 point deficit to reclaim the top spot. Mulipola was 2-2 in the season’s final game, boasting a triple and a home run as well as two walks.
For the first time in Athletes Unlimited history, Mulipola also won the league’s Triple Crown, finishing the summer in first place in home runs, RBIs, and batting average. Her numbers included hitting at a .432 clip with nine home runs and 19 RBIs to her credit. Her home run total also tied the league’s single-season record.
“It’s so surreal,” Mulipola said after her championship. “Everyone had a key in contributing to this gold medal. I have so many amazing relationships with players in this league, including Amanda Chidester and Danielle O’Toole, who are veterans of the game and amazing human beings outside of the game. I was a rookie last year, so I was scared and didn’t know too much about the ropes of playing in this league. Having that season under my belt and just being myself this year really helped me succeed.”
Alyssa Denham, who was also Mulipola’s collegiate teammate at Arizona, finished in second place in the league standings. Haylie McCleney and Sahvanna Jaquish finished third and fourth, respectively. Former Texas standout Shannon Rhodes was named the league’s Rookie of the Year, while Hannah Flippen earned Defensive Player of the Year honors.
