Norfolk State head coach James Inzana has retired from his post, Extra Inning Softball confirmed on Monday.

“Coach Inzana retired from full time coaching over the summer and the job posting was recently listed,” a Norfolk State spokesperson told Extra Inning Softball on Monday. The statement added that assistant coach Carrie Hoeft is currently the program’s interim coach.

Inzana spent the last five seasons as the Spartans’ head coach, engineering a program turnaround that included a MEAC division title in 2019. The Spartans finished in the top three in their division in every season of his tenure.

The MEAC Coach of the Year in 2019 and 2021, Inzana recorded his 100th career head coaching win during the 2022 campaign. The 2022 season saw the program post a 34-23 overall record, with a 16-5 conference showing.

As a Division 1 program, Norfolk State has posted just six winning seasons. Three of those years came under Inzana’s shepherding.

Prior to his tenure at NSU, Inzana spent eight years as an assistant at Virginia Wesleyan. He was part of the staff that guided the Marlins to the Division III national title in 2017. His resume also includes time as a high school and travel ball coach.

In 2005, Inzana retired from the US Navy after twenty years of service.
