As part of continued efforts to update and restructure existing rules related to the student-athlete transfer process, the NCAA unveiled plans on Saturday for a physical transfer portal at the organization’s headquarters in Indianapolis.
While only mock-up images have been released thus-far, the physical portal will itself be unveiled at a press conference in Indianapolis on April 31st.
Per an NCAA announcement, moving forward, student-athletes who wish to transfer will be required to physically enter the portal to be immediately eligible to play at a new school.
“We believe the portal will add to the student-athlete experience and bring a new element to the transfer process, something that our member schools have been asking for for quite some time,” NCAA Chief Portal Officer Matt Smith said in a statement.
Previously required to simply give notice to their current schools of a decision to transfer, student-athletes will now be required to pass through the physical portal before becoming eligible to be contacted by new schools and programs. The portal will also include an optional element where a transferring student-athlete can ask for help in choosing potential destinations and the portal will randomly select up to twelve options.
When that optional element, dubbed in an NCAA release as the In-Flux Condenser, is utilized, the transferring student-athlete will have the option of taking an official visit to each of the twelve schools suggested.
Reached for comment, Vermont head softball coach Jackie Bradley said, “This is a game-changer for both schools and student-athletes and the transferring process. We have needed something like this for a long time, something that requires an effort from all parties involved and also can serve as one centralized step in the process. It gives new meaning to ‘entering the portal.'”
The physical transfer portal will be christened for the first time when the transfer window for softball student-athletes opens following the completion of the Women’s College World Series.
(Happy April 1st!)
