Recapping Team USA & Scrap Yard Weekend Games

Rachel Garcia pitched 3 2/3rd innings without giving a hit for USA Red in the 8-3 win over USA Blue on Saturday, June 16 at the Scrap Yard Sports Complex.

Mother Nature must have wanted the best softball players in the world to go enjoy more of Father’s Day as today’s sole game at the Scrap Yard Sports Complex in Conroe, Texas ended as it was going into the bottom of the 3rd inning of a scoreless game between USA Red and Scrap Yard.

The Complex has an innovative turf field to drain water effectively, but it the Texas-sized squall made it too slick and slippery so the contest was cancelled with each team only mustering one hit off of the two pitchers, Monica Abbott of USA Red and Dallas Escobedo of Scrap Yard, who had led their teams to victories Friday night.

It was unfortunate that the pitcher’s duel between the standouts in the circle didn’t get to play out, but there was enough great softball on Saturday between the Team USA squads and the Scrap Yard lineup to more than compensate for the premature soggy ending of the six-game series that ran from Friday through Sunday after a week’s worth of USA Softball training and workouts at the Complex.

Here’s a quick recap of the three games on Saturday:

Game 1: Scrap Yard 6, USA Blue 3
Katiyana Mauga and Ashley Walters drew bases-loaded walks in the top of the 8th inning to break open what had been a 3-3 tie as Scrap Yard pulled out the extra inning win. Cheridan Hawkins gave up one earned run in 4 2/3rd innings to start the game and Lauren Haeger got the win as she gave up just one hit in her final 2 1/3rd innings of work.

Game 2: USA Red 8, USA Blue 3
In a game matching the two Team USA squads, Rachel Garcia was the pitching star for USA Red as she allowed no hits over 3 2/3rd innings of work.  Kirsti Merritt had a big day offensively as she homered and went 2-for-2 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Game 3: Scrap Yard 4, USA Red 0
New addition to the Scrap Yard, Kylee Hanson—who earlier this month won a National Championship with Florida State—pitched a complete game shutout scattering nine hits but giving up just one walk to shut down the potent USA Red Team, which left eight runners on base (Scrap Yard, despite the win, left 12 runners stranded).
