WEILER TACKLES WRESTLING

Myia Weiler’s No. 1 sport is softball and playing for NorCal Choppers 18U-Kiko/Stone, but she recently tried a new sport for her junior year at College Park High.

“I didn’t really know what to expect going into wrestling,” said Weiler, a 2023 OF/slapper. “My dad has wrestled his entire life and encouraged me to try something new. When I told him I wanted to try it, he was thrilled and took me under his wing.”

Weiler’s dad, Mark, has been wrestling since he was 9 years old. He was recruited by the youth wrestling coach while playing football. He learned freestyle and Greco, learned under a renowned coach in the area, placed in numerous state meets and was able to travel and compete nationally.

“This sport has taught me how to push through even when I feel like quitting,” she said. “It’s pushed me to limits I never thought I could reach before. I’ve noticed I’ve not only become stronger physically, but mentally.

Softball has played a huge part in this sport, helping me with mental toughness, but also my reflexes and quickness. For only wrestling for 2 1/2 months, I’ve grown so much and continue to work harder every single practice.

“Before I started wrestling, grounding out or making an error in the outfield would make me furious. When I first started wrestling, I’d get knocked down all the time and it would drive me insane. Not only has it taught me to work hard and push through my obstacles, but to accept that I’m not always going to win. I am super competitive, so not winning every single match going into wrestling was frustrating. I started incorporating this mindset into softball and, man, I’ve become so much looser and a better ballplayer.”

Weiler, who is also coached by her dad in wrestling, made a recent Twitter post of her avenging one of her losses in wrestling.

“By the way, I wrestled the girl in the video when first started wrestling in November and I got pinned,” Weiler said. “I go over each match with my coaches to understand where I went wrong and what to do next time. She is two weight classes heavier and ranked, so I was a bit nervous to wrestle her again. I knew I needed mat time with league championships and (CIF North Coast Section) around the corner, so I went for it and gave it my all. This is my favorite example of the way this sport challenges me mentally and physically.”

BTW, Weiler scored a pin-fall victory in the rematch.
