The Latest on Extra Inning Softball’s Carlos Arias’ Recovery: More Good News As “Los” Is Moved to A Long Term Acute Care (LTAC) Facility

It’s been 5 1/2 weeks but in some ways it feels like 5 1/s months since I last spoke to Extra Inning Softball Editor Carlos Arias, who continues to recover after a serious stroke last month.

For those who aren’t aware, Carlos—who does so much for Extra Innings including team rankings, The Last Inning columns and player spotlights through blogs and Extra Star Powers—had a major stroke on Friday, May 14, 2021 and twice we thought we had lost him. As his mother, Sue, kept me updated, Carlos was just hours away from being taken off life support.

Last weekend I was at the Top Gun Invitational in Kansas City watching excellent competitive softball and no less than 10-12 times I was asked (when people saw my Extra Inning Softball shirt): “How’s Carlos?”

The love and outpouring for our comrade has been inspiring and I want you, the softball community, to know that I send many to his parents so they can share with Carlos and also know themselves how many across the country have him in thoughts and prayers.

Every day I get notes like this one yesterday from Wil in Kentucky:

“hope Los is doing better, we are praying for him.

I’m happy to report that Carlos IS doing better–here’s a note that his mother sent me last night:

“Carlos has been talking more and moving his arms and legs more. Today (Tuesday, 6/22) he was moved to LTAC (long term acute care) . He will be in Modesto for a while with more physical and speech therapy. We are praying this is where a lot could happen. It will take patience and hard work. Everyday is a miracle. Let the softball world we appreciate their support. 🙂💖😇

Sue followed up with this note soon after:

“Thanks for your encouragement and (the) good wishes from people, it keeps us going. I literally just got off the phone with his nurse at the new hospital. She said he’s getting settled in and we will be able to see him on Thursday. I will let you know how it goes. God bless🙂😇
