Since our last update two weeks ago, I’ve had many more people reach out to ask, “How is Carlos doing?” and follow up with “I’m so glad to hear he’s getting better… what’s the latest?”
For those not familiar, Extra Inning Softball Editor Carlos Arias was hospitalized with a serious stroke on May.
Carlos, who has overseen many of our content pieces including team rankings, The Last Inning columns and player spotlights through blogs and Extra Star Powers, didn’t look like he’d make it that first week but since then has slowly but surely made progress.
As I continue to receive much appreciated updates from his parents, Sue and Will, we’ve learned the following over the last two weeks:
Thursday, July 22
Carlos got the trache out yesterday. He was fairly alert and joyful. As soon as he got it out, he looked at his dad and said ” can we go home now”. He doesn’t totally get that was the first part now he’s got to get some of the physical therapy parts done now.

They are starting to ramp up PT for Carlos. He’s cooperating pretty well. He says he gets nauseous when they stand him up. Physical therapist says that’s normal. Will and I are really encouraged. He ate some pudding today. Not a fav yet.

Big update… Yesterday when we went to see Carlos we found him sitting in a wheelchair. He looked great he knew what was happening very alert and talkative. We were asked if we would like to go down to the sunroom to visit so we walked the length of the corridor with Carlos in the wheelchair and he was doing great just to be out of that room.
His physical therapy has really stepped up, they are now making sure that he’s getting it pretty much every day they have him standing on a standing board which helps balance him into the standing position and today he was standing for 6 minutes. Kind of like an Olympic record.
The social worker said she’s looking for a sub-Acute Center in Fresno for the next phase of Carlos’s recovery. We’re praying for that one. Please let everyone know he’s working hard and getting better.🙏
BTW a shampoo and haircut is in his future.
If you’d like to support Carlos and his family with their extensive medical costs, please check out the GoFundMe has been set up… here’s the link to it:
Thank you all again for your sincere empathy for Carlos; he and his family are aware of it and are very appreciative for the true care shown by the softball community.
