From January 3 through the beginning of the regular season, we’re going to take a look at every Division 1 conference and Forecast what to expect in each league this season. Today, we take a look at the Sun Belt.
I. Conference Breakdown
There are ten teams that play softball in the Sun Belt. Those programs include Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, South Alabama, Texas State, Troy, and UT-Arlington.
Announced this week, James Madison will join the Sun Belt this summer, one year sooner than anticipated. UT-Arlington will also depart the league to join the WAC at the same time. Next year, the conference will also add Marshall and Southern Miss.
During the 2021 season, Louisiana-Lafayette continued their dominance of the Sun Belt, winning both the conference’s regular-season and tournament titles. A total of four teams represented the Sun Belt in the NCAA tournament; in addition to the Cajuns, Texas State, South Alabama, and Troy were selected for postseason play.
