From January 3 through the beginning of the regular season, we’re going to take a look at every Division 1 conference and Forecast what to expect in each league this season. Today, we take a look at the Western Athletic Conference, the WAC.
I. Conference Breakdown
There are eleven softball programs that play in the WAC. Those programs include Abilene Christian, Cal Baptist, Dixie State, Grand Canyon, Lamar, New Mexico State, Sam Houston State, Seattle, Stephen F. Austin, Tarleton State, and Utah Valley.
No conference saw the change in volume that the WAC did among their membership. The league added four teams, known as the “Texas Four”, a group that included Abilene Christian, Lamar, Sam Houston State, and Stephen F. Austin. On July 1st of this year, three more teams will join the league – Incarnate Word, Southern Utah, and UT-Arlington. Next summer, both New Mexico State and Sam Houston State will depart the WAC to join Conference USA.
Last season, New Mexico State won the WAC’s regular-season crown, but it was 2nd-seeded Seattle that emerged victorious from the conference tournament. The Redhawks earned the regional 3-seed at the Regional hosted by the Washington Huskies.
