2023 College Team Profile: Campbell Fighting Camels

Two years ago, Campbell won a game in the 2021 NCAA tournament. Rare, though not unheard of, for a regional 4-seed, the Camels staved off elimination and extended their postseason stay a bit longer.

One year later, in 2022, the Camels finished the regular season in a three-way tie for first place in their conference, only to make a run in the conference tournament en route to their second-consecutive NCAA postseason berth.

Both achievements were marked indicators of just how far the Campbell program has climbed in the span of a few short years. Now a perennial NCAA tournament team and a Big South juggernaut, the ceiling has been set at a high level for the program that calls Buies Creek, North Carolina home.

A coaching change took place within the program this summer. Previous head coach Sharonda McDonald-Kelley departed to take the reins at Michigan State; in her stead, the Camels brought in former Iowa assistant coach Trena Prater. Now tasked with maintaining the Camels’ winning ways, Prater will also be the one to guide the program through a conference transition next year.
