2023 Western Athletic Conference Forecast

As part of our in-depth preseason college softball coverage, today we dive into the Western Athletic Conference – the WAC – and forecast what could be in store for the league during the 2023 season.

1. Conference Breakdown

Grand Canyon won both the WAC regular-season and tournament titles a year ago; the Lopes won the WAC West Division, while Stephen F. Austin took home the WAC Southwest Division. GCU earned the top overall seed in the conference tournament, later winning that same tournament and representing the league in the NCAA tournament.

The WAC were one league that got caught up in realignment this summer, adding two softball-playing schools and losing a third. UT-Arlington and Southern Utah joined the league, while Lamar departed after just one year.

There are currently twelve softball programs that compete in the WAC. Those programs include Abilene Christian, Cal Baptist, Grand Canyon, New Mexico State, Sam Houston State, Seattle, Southern Utah, Stephen F. Austin, Tarleton, UT-Arlington, Utah Tech, and Utah Valley.
