When the conversation comes to top young catchers in the game, you need to go to Texas because there’s two in one household.
And soon, maybe three. With their dad being a club coach in the Hotshots organization, you also know there’s bound to be a lot of softball talk over dinner.
One thing both of the older two sisters have in common as well: when the 2025 Extra Elite 100 rankings are finalized, it will be one of the rare times that two non-twin sisters have made the lists.
KK Esparza, the older backstop, is a 2021 grad and is committed to Ole Miss while Charleigh is a 2025 grad. Their father, Charlie Esparza, has coached both and currently manages the Hotshots Premier Nationals 14U team which Charleigh is on.
He also has another young prospect-to-watch coming up in Cayne, who is a promising baseball player who plays some catcher and third base.
Interestingly, all three wear the same number, #10.
So how does their father/coach compare the two oldest?
“KK was ahead of the curve,” their dad begins. “Her softball IQ was just so knowledgeable for her age. KK has always been that one who drives herself to work and work hard. They have about the same strength at the age Charleigh is now although she (Charleigh) has the ability to flash her arm more and may have the better arm strength.”
Both of the sibling catchers were taught to call their own games and to understand pitch calling and are very close in skill sets.
“If I had to go head-to-head at the same age,” Coach Esparza admits, “KK edges out the victory now, but Charleigh has deeply impressed me the last three months or so in her growth.”
