How Extra Inning Softball Evaluates Athletes Through a Transparent and Consistent Rankings Process

When athletes, parents, coaches, and college recruiters view an Extra Inning Softball ranking, one question naturally follows:

“How was this athlete evaluated?”

At Extra Inning Softball, we believe every family deserves that answer.

That’s why we developed the SERV™ Methodology—our comprehensive athlete evaluation framework designed to make the rankings process more transparent, consistent, accountable, and repeatable.

Unlike rankings that rely primarily on opinion or a single evaluation period, SERV™ combines technology, human evaluation, research, and verification over several months to ensure every athlete is reviewed under the same standards.

No rankings system will ever be perfect.

But every rankings system should have a process.

SERV™ is ours.

What Does SERV™ Stand For?

SERV™ represents the four pillars of our athlete evaluation process:

S — Software

Technology helps us evaluate more athletes more consistently than ever before.

Our proprietary software organizes athlete information from multiple sources while helping our Rankings Committee identify trends, compare data, and flag profiles requiring additional review.

Software does not determine rankings.

Instead, it serves as a decision-support tool that allows our committee to evaluate athletes more efficiently and consistently.

Our software calculates:

• Statistical trends
• Strength of schedule
• Tournament participation
• Internal evaluation notes

Technology helps reduce human error.

People make the final decisions.

E — Evaluation

Every athlete is evaluated by people—not algorithms.

Extra Inning Softball utilizes a Rankings Committee consisting of experienced evaluators from across the country.

Rather than relying on one person’s opinion, athletes are reviewed through multiple perspectives, creating a more balanced evaluation process.

Committee members consider factors including:

• Athletic ability
• Skill development
• Position-specific performance
• Projectability
• Competitive level
• Athleticism
• Game impact
• Consistency

Each athlete is evaluated within the context of her position, helping ensure pitchers are compared with pitchers, catchers with catchers, middle infielders with middle infielders, and so on.

We believe position-specific evaluation creates a more meaningful comparison for athletes, families, and college coaches.

R — Research

Great evaluations require great information.

Our committee spends months researching athletes before rankings are finalized.

Research may include:

• Tournament observations
• National events
• Video review
• Verified statistics
• Coach feedback
• Athlete nominations
• Historical performance
• Development over time
• Performance records
• Multi-source evaluation

Rather than focusing on one outstanding weekend—or one difficult tournament—we evaluate athletes over an extended period whenever possible.

Our goal is to recognize sustained excellence, continued growth, and long-term projection.

V — Verification

Sometimes additional information is needed.

When questions arise—or our internal systems identify information requiring clarification—we may reach out directly to coaches or organizations for verification.

Verification helps us:

• Confirm roster info
• Clarify positions played
• Verify statistics 
• Resolve conflicting info
• Better understand an athlete’s role on her team

Verification is used when additional confirmation helps improve the accuracy and consistency of the evaluation process.

Our responsibility is to evaluate athletes as thoroughly and fairly as possible using the information available during each rankings cycle.

Why We Eliminated Tied Rankings

One of the first decisions made after implementing SERV™ was eliminating tied rankings.

We believe every athlete deserves an individual placement earned through the evaluation process.

Assigning unique rankings provides:

• Greater accountability
• Greater transparency
• Clearer distinctions
• More meaningful recognition

Every placement represents the committee’s best evaluation based on the available information.
