Big East Expanding Conference Tournament Size, Format

The Big East will expand postseason opportunities for the softball conference tournament, expanding both the number of teams qualifying for the tournament as well as the format of the championship event itself.

Previously, the Big East conference tournament consisted of four teams in a single-elimination format over two days.

Under the new format, six teams will qualify for the conference tournament. The championship will also be conducted in a double-elimination format. The tournament will also move to being a 4-day event from start to finish.

The 2023 Big East softball tournament will be hosted by UConn at Burrill Family Field for the second time in a three-year period.

Currently, nine teams compete on the softball diamond in the Big East. DePaul and UConn won the conference regular-season titles in 2021 and 2022, respectively, though Villanova won back-to-back tournament titles and represented the league in the NCAA tournament in both years.
