Tragic news impacting the softball world today as 17-year-old junior Ashton Pryor of Boonville (Ind.) High was killed this morning in a car accident while driving to school with her younger sister.

WFIE, the NBC-affiliated TV station out of Evansville, Indiana, as well as the Evansville Courier & Press both reported the news today (click HERE to link to the WFIE web story; click HERE to access the Courier & Press article).

As a freshman two years ago, Ashton helped lead the Pioneers to the Indiana Class 3A state title trophy in 2021 and, in November of last year, gave a verbal commit to play softball at Indiana State where her older sister, Randi Jo, is a sophomore and infielder on the team.

Ashton, according to a report issued by the Warrick County Sheriff’s Office, was driving a Jeep Wrangler with her 15-year-old sister, Peyton Pryor, on their way to school when the vehicle lost control in northern Warrick County, struck a guardrail and rolled over.

The older sibling was pronounced dead at the scene while her younger sister, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Evansville.

According to the Courier & Press article published this afternoon:

“Pryor was a standout on the softball team. She was the starting third baseman as a freshman on the Class 3A state championship in 2021 and recorded one of the Pioneers’ two hits in the title game. Pryor moved to pitcher last spring and earned honorable mention All-PAC honors the past two years.”

The Boonsville High School administration issued the following statement today:

“Many of you may know, early Friday morning there was a terrible tragedy and two BHS students were in a car accident on the way to school. One of those students, Ashton Pryor, lost her life. Peyton Pryor was taken to the hospital for treatment and has been released.”

“As a freshman, Ashton played on the 2021 state championship team where she hit for power and patrolled the hot corner like a seasoned veteran. Her zest for life and passion for softball will always be remembered.”

The school announced there will be a prayer vigil at the Boonville softball field on Sunday at 5:30 p.m.

The boys’ basketball game scheduled for Saturday at South Spencer has been canceled and ruled a no-contest and will not be made up.

The Indiana Fusion travel ball organization, which covers Southern Indiana and parts of Kentucky, issued this statement a short time ago:

Ashton played third base and first base for the Fusion previously.

Surrounding schools and organizations were already planning tributes to the teenager and her family:
