Chelsea Butler has been named the head coach at Wofford, the school announced on Wednesday morning.
Wofford is the newest Division 1 program to begin a new softball program; after being announced last year, the program has already made progress in the form of a stadium project and will take the field for the 2024 season.
Butler spent the last three years as the pitching coach at Maryland and was part of the coaching staff that led the Terps to a 5th-place finish in the Big Ten standings this season. It was the program’s highest conference finish since Maryland joined the league.
In a statement, Wofford athletic director Richard Johnson said, “We are excited to have Chelsea take the helm as we launch our softball team. It is important to get things right when you are starting a program. Coach Mark Line has done a great job in laying the foundation and now he is turning it over to Chelsea to continue to build the team. We look forward to seeing them take the field in the spring of 2024.”
Prior to joining the staff at Maryland, Butler’s resume includes stints on staff at Incarnate Word, Presbyterian, Temple, and Utah State. She also spent a year on staff at her alma mater, Eastern Kentucky. After beginning her career in junior college, she spent her last two seasons of eligibility at Eastern Kentucky and graduated from the Colonels’ program.
