It’s Friday, July 2nd so that must mean it’s time to get serious in the Rocky Mountain State…. At least when it comes to travel softball!
Bracket play—the march towards the title games—began today at the Boulder Independence Day Tournament (IDT) (although some bracket contests kick off Saturday bright and early) as well as at the Triple Crown Sports’ Sparkler and Fireworks, which has 1,000 teams trying to stay alive until Sunday when the fireworks really begin.
In more ways than one!

First, though, we’re going to profile one of the teams at Triple Crown that is having another great year… and one of many hoping to still be playing come Sunday morning into the afternoon!
Louisville Lady Sluggers – Murphy Spotlight
For the second consecutive year the Louisville Lady Sluggers organization has a Triple Crown Sports Power Pool TV game Championship.
First Sluggers – Huecker, led by Jim Huecker, and now Sluggers – Murphy, coached by Don Murphy.
The Sluggers – Murphy team—playing went on a run this week knocking off an impressive group of nationally ranked opponents while winning the 16 Power Pool Championship with a decisive victory over Firecrackers Brashear 9-1.
Coach Murphy said:
“I couldn’t be more proud of this team. We are extremely young, but these kids have bought into what we are building here and got hot at the right team. We played some really good softball teams this week and went undefeated in the Power Pool. It has been great week, but I told my team to enjoy the win today, reset and tomorrow we are 0-0 going forward.”
Sluggers – Murphy has been led by 2023 Top 50 player Delani Sullivan who was leading all players in the 16 Division as of today with 16 hits and has been an absolute terror on the bases.
Coach Murphy added:
“Delani is as locked in as any player I have ever coached. She has the unique ability to take over a game and is a triple threat with game changing speed. She is getting a ton of attention and deserves it. She is batting .850 with 14 runs scored, 6 stolen bases and 7 RBIs.”
Also leading the offensive charge for the Sluggers has been 2023 grad Brenna Sherman who was 2-for 2 with 6 RBIs in the Championship Game, including a grand slam in the bottom of the 2nd inning.
Her coach says:
“Brenna just competes. She is a pretty laid-back kid until she steps between the lines and then she turns into an animal. Brenna is big-time and she will be very busy September 1.”
In the circle, Sluggers have leaned heavily on 2022 flame thrower Sophie Kleiman. Murphy says of his impressive pitcher:
“Sophie has been incredible in the circle. She wants the ball and has turned a lot of heads this week. Sophie throws in the upper 60’s and has big-time bite on her pitches. She was a sleeper until this past week and now everyone knows her. Sophie has worked her tail off this past winter and spring and is reaping the rewards.”
