Cal is hiring Danielle O’Toole as an assistant coach.
O’Toole will be the Bears’ pitching coach; she replaces Amber Freeman, who departed to join the coaching staff at Georgia.
Most recently, O’Toole spent three seasons as the volunteer assistant and pitching coach at Cal State Fullerton. During the 2023 season, she shepherded the Titans’ bullpen to a 1.87 staff ERA, 34 wins, and a cumulative 369 strikeouts in 366 innings of work.
Prior to her tenure on staff at Fullerton, O’Toole spent a tenure on staff as pitching coach at the University of San Diego. She also has served a facilitator with Athletes Unlimited this summer after retiring from her own playing career in 2022.
During her playing career, O’Toole played at San Diego State and Arizona; in 2014, she earned the Mountain West Pitcher of the Year award and in 2017, she was named the PAC-12 Pitcher of the Year and an All-American while at UA. Her playing career also saw her play for several years professionally, as well as on the Mexican National Team in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
In 2023, the Cal pitching staff posted a 3.83 staff ERA and held opponents to a .264 batting average.
