Entire Holy Names Roster Enters Transfer Portal; Hawks’ Athletic Program to Fold

Every member of the Holy Names Hawks’ 19-player active roster appeared in the NCAA’s transfer portal over a 36-hour period late this week.

The mass exodus drew some eyeballs, but has a simple explanation: Their program is going away.

According to a letter from the school president published online in late November, the entire Hawks athletic program will fold following the 2022-23 academic year. The softball program will play the 2023 season, their final year.

A Division II program located in Oakland, California, Holy Names competed at the NAIA level from 1996-2012 before moving up to Division 2. The Hawks developed their softball program in 2008 and have competed since.

Currently, the program is led by program alumnus Geena Garabedian. Former Oregon State star Mariah Mazon also joined the program as a graduate assistant this fall.

During the 2022 season, the Hawks finished with an 11-37 overall record and a 7-25 conference showing. They’re set to kick off the 2023 campaign on February 4th at Sonoma State.
