Extra Inning Softball’s National High School Player of the Week

* Many areas of the country are dealing with winter storms bringing brutal cold, snow, ice and flooding in some places, but in Texas there’s been some impressive high school softball played already.

Take Prosper High, for example, where the Eagles have jumped out to a 6-0 record in large part because of the explosive offense.

Sydney plays first base for the Eagles.

Leading the charge is senior first baseman Sydney Lewis, a Maryland signee, who has had an explosive start for Coach Todd Rainwater’s team.

Sydney went 8-for-13 for a .613 batting average last week and was 10-for-15 (.667) in getting on base which included two walks.

But the state that really stands out: 17 RBIs as part of a 1.846 slugging percentage and a stellar 2.513 OPS.

“Not only is she explosive with her bat and RBIs,” says Coach Rainwater, “Sydney is our vocal leader. She is out best encourager, our loudest voice and a top competitor. The whole team feels her confidence! Sydney is contagious and a joy to be around off the field.”

Last year, the Texan earned 6A All-State honorable mention, Dallas-Ft. Worth 1st Team All-Metro Plex and 1st Team All-Area honors after hitting .463 with 13 home runs, 44 RBIs and 28 runs scored.

Sydney also made the 2022 Extra Elite 100 final rankings and plays club ball for the Texas Glory 18U team led by head coach Kevin Shelton who has described her as “a terror at the plate who routinely draws an intentional walk from opposing coaches.”

Coach Rainwater adds: “Sydney has fast hands with great power and great eye discipline.”

The senior also has 26 career home runs and is just three shy of the school record. She already holds the Prosper High career doubles mark with 34.

Runner-Up National Players of the Week

Gabby Coffey hit five home runs last week to earn Runner-Up honors.

*** Opponents of Prosper can’t exactly pitch around Sydney as the lineup is loaded with big bats including leadoff senior shortstop Ayden Allen, a Houston signee, who sets the table for the Eagles and is currently batting .529.

Also dangerous is third baseman and catcher Elizabeth Moffitt who is Texas Tech bound and holds the school’s single season home run record with 16.

Then there’s Gabby Coffey, the Mississippi State signee who rotates with Moffitt at third and behind the plate.

She had a huge week too as she batted .642 (9-for-14) with five home runs, four walks and eight RBIs.

For her career, she has 95 RBIs and is just 12 away from Proper career record. She also has 23 career home runs and it will be a fun race to see how she and Sydney Lewis end up as both will likely surpass the school’s current mark.

“Gabby is our quiet one,” Coach Rainwater explains. “She’s the most patient hitter we have and leads the team in walks and when they pitch to her she makes them pay as she hits for power and a high average.”

Also a member of the 2022 Extra Elite 100 and a member of the Texas Glory program, Gabby competed on the Brazilian Jr. National Team in December in the Pan American Youth Games. You can read our spotlight feature on Gabby from November by Clicking HERE.

Maryssa Zenzen hit .579 with nine RBIs.

*** Another big bat in the Lone Star State last week was the one swing by 2023 corner infielder Maryssa Zenzen of Waller High.

The Louisiana-Monroe commit helped her team go 5-2 last week as she went 11-for-19 at the plate for a .579 batting average with a home run, nine RBIs, three walks and four stolen bases.

Maryssa was ranked #80 in the 2023 Extra Elite 100 and plays for the KC Jackson’s 18U Impact Gold team.

* Finally, in our look at action last week, we give props to Gigi Ganje of Aliso Niguel High in Aliso Viejo, California.

On Saturday (Feb. 19), the 2024 Extra Elite 100 Top 15-ranked centerfielder came up big with her bat as she hit a game-winning walk-off double to beat La Serna High in the 8th inning.

This after, a week ago Saturday, she made a great catch in the outfield (see the clip below).

Not a surprise for Gigi, who plays club ball for the BSC Bengals – Briggs 18U team, as her coach, Randi Baldwin, told us:

“She will be a force offensively and defensively for us all year and I’m fired up about her future with our program!”
