Extra Inning Softball’s National High School Player of the Week

* Nothing like going out with a bang for senior pitcher and shortstop Lexie Warncke of East Bernard (Texas) High.

The Baylor signee got it done at the plate and at the circle for the Brahmarettes in the team’s opening week of the season.

She went 12-for-16 with an on-base percentage of .636 with a pair of home runs, three triples and two doubles to give her a 1.688 slugging percentage.

Lexie averaged more than two K’s per inning thanks to her riseball, in particular.

But Lexie didn’t just limit her production to her explosive bat: she also was all but untouchable in her pitching performances as she went 3-0 with a save and also threw a perfect game.

She averaged over two strikeouts per inning with 49 Ks in 21.2 innings pitched and only gave up one walk for the week. All told, the Texas senior gave up just nine hits and one earned run (four runs total) as her ERA was a miniscule 0.204.

The athlete says that one pitch in particular was really spot on last week.

“I felt great in the circle all week,” Lexie recalls. “I was really focused on location and movement and my riseball was my best and most consistent pitch as it allowed me to get many strikeouts and record another perfect game.”

The future Baylor Bear says doing mental work also helped sharpen her game.

“During this week’s games,” Lexie continued, “I thought about who we were playing, the competition they would bring, and how we should prepare.”

“My favorite accomplishment of the week was on Tuesday against Columbus. With two outs in the 7th, I stepped up to the plate focused on getting a hit to drive in the tying run and putting myself in a place to be the winning run.”

“I hit a double over the left fielder’s head, took an extra bag, and accomplished my goal of putting my team in a place to win. (Left-fielder) Bryleigh (Pless) followed with a big hit and we won.”

Head Coach Christy Sheets noted that her senior, who sharpens her pitching with Kyla Holas and Cat Osterman of the Bombers 18U Gold – Smith club organization, did everything and more of what was asked of her to kick the season off in a big way.

“What impressed me about Lexie last week was several things,” Coach Sheets began. “Her control in the circle—she attacked the strike zone with great success—and, at the plate, her ability to hit to all fields included an opposite field home run.”

“As coaches, out of great players we expect great things and Lexie certainly delivered last week on that.”
