Extra Inning Softball’s National High School Player of the Week

* Willow Canyon High of Surprise, Arizona was ranked #14 in the Extra Inning Softball Pre-Season Extra Elite Eighty High School Rankings released last Friday after going 22-1 last year and one reason why was the pitching of junior Marissa McCann, a Missouri commit.
Last week, Marissa twice faced pre-season #10-ranked Xavier Prep of Phoenix, the 2021 Arizona Class 5A state champs, and came away with a win and a no-decision as she struck out 24 in 10 innings pitched against the Gators (the teams split the two games).
For the week overall, the pitcher went 3-0 with 43 strikeouts in 20 innings and had a 0.35 ERA, a WHIP of .550 and allowed opposing hitters to bat just .157 against her.
In the first game against Xavier, Marissa went seven innings giving up just three hits while striking out 17 in the complete game shutout. She also tossed a complete game one-hitter against Centennial with 8 K’s in five innings and followed that up
Against Pinnacle, Marissa threw five more innings, struck out 11 giving up one earned run on three hits.

Runner-Up National Players of the Week

* If the pitching of Marissa McCann hadn’t been so impressive, her teammate Alannah Rogers, a senior infielder signed with Louisiana Tech, could have very likely been the National Player of the Week.
Alannah put up video game numbers in the Sunrise Mountain tournament as she went 14-for-18 (.778) with a .833 on-base percentage.
Among her hits were five doubles and three triples as she knocked in eight runs and scored 15 herself. She also had five steals and in the infield went a perfect 11-for-11 in total chances, backing up her pitcher with stellar defense.
Making it even more impressive, Alannah faced two future D1 pitchers in the tournament. Noteworthy, too, is the athlete’s success in another sport: she finished 6th in the state as a wrestler!
* Xavier Prep (Phoenix, AZ) showed why they are a Top 10 team and the defending Arizona state champs as the Gators won the Sunrise Mountain Tournament behind the hitting of senior shortstop Bridget Donahey, who batted .625 with eight runs scored, 10 RBIs, four home runs, two triples and a pair of doubles.
She has signed with Northwestern.
* In the circle for Xavier Prep, Riley Flynn, a senior who is headed to Harvard, went 4-0 including the win over Willow Canyon. She also hit .667 with a triple and two RBIs.

* Tanya Windle, a senior shortstop, centerfielder and pitcher for Cactus High (Glendale, Arizona), had a sizzling week at the plate and on the mound as she hit .800 for the week, going 12-for-15 with four home runs, two triples and two singles.
The Dixie State signee also stole seven bases and, in the circle, recorded 26 strikeouts in two games.
